Best Hotels in Cameron Highlands

Personal reviews and recommendations based on multiple visits and genuine stays at these properties.

Over the past several years, I have stayed at more than a dozen different accommodations across Cameron Highlands. Some visits were for quick weekend getaways, others for extended stays during the cooler months. This page represents my honest assessment of the hotels that have consistently impressed me.

I evaluate hotels based on several factors: room comfort, service quality, location convenience, value for money, and that intangible feeling of whether a place truly captures the highland escape experience. Below are my top recommendations, organized by category to help you find exactly what suits your travel style.

Luxury Hotels

For those seeking the finest accommodations Cameron Highlands has to offer, these properties deliver exceptional experiences that justify their premium pricing.

The Lakehouse Cameron Highlands

Exceptional - Highly Recommended

The Lakehouse remains my personal favorite property in all of Cameron Highlands. This Tudor-style boutique hotel sits beside a peaceful lake, creating an atmosphere that feels transported from the English countryside. The architecture dates back to the 1960s but has been meticulously maintained and updated with modern comforts.

What sets The Lakehouse apart is its intimate scale. With only 18 rooms, the staff provides genuinely personalized service. During my anniversary stay, the team remembered our preferences from a previous visit and had fresh flowers and local strawberries waiting in our room.

The on-site restaurant serves excellent European and Malaysian cuisine, and their afternoon tea overlooking the lake has become a tradition for us. The gardens are immaculately kept, and morning walks around the property offer beautiful misty views.

Cameron Highlands Resort

Excellent - Premium Choice

Part of the YTL Hotels portfolio, Cameron Highlands Resort represents the most polished luxury experience in the highlands. The resort combines colonial heritage with contemporary luxury, and their attention to detail is apparent throughout the property.

The Jim Thompson Tea Room deserves special mention. Named after the American entrepreneur who revitalized Thai silk industry before mysteriously disappearing in these very highlands in 1967, the afternoon tea experience here is legendary. They serve scones with BOH tea estate strawberry jam and clotted cream that rivals what you might find in Devon.

Rooms are spacious with hardwood floors and period furniture. The spa offers excellent treatments, and their guided nature walks introduce guests to the unique flora and fauna of the montane forest. This is where I bring visitors who want to understand why Cameron Highlands holds such a special place in Malaysian hearts.

Mid-Range Hotels

These properties offer excellent value, combining comfortable accommodations with good locations without the premium pricing of luxury resorts.

Heritage Hotel Cameron Highlands

Very Good - Solid Choice

Heritage Hotel strikes an excellent balance between comfort and affordability. The property has been well-maintained over the years, and recent renovations have updated the rooms while preserving the classic highland hotel character.

The rooms are notably spacious compared to other properties in this price range. I particularly appreciate the thick curtains that block out light for those who want to sleep in during the cool highland mornings. The in-house restaurant serves reliable local and Western dishes, and their breakfast buffet is comprehensive.

Location is excellent, within walking distance of Tanah Rata town center where you will find restaurants, shops, and the local market. The staff is helpful with arranging tours and transportation.

Price Range MYR 180 - 350 per night
Best For Couples, small families
Location Tanah Rata town center

Strawberry Park Resort

Very Good - Family Favorite

Strawberry Park Resort occupies a unique position in the Cameron Highlands accommodation landscape. The property is designed as a collection of Tudor-style apartments and chalets spread across landscaped grounds, making it particularly suitable for families and groups.

The resort offers various room configurations, from standard hotel rooms to multi-bedroom apartments with kitchens. During my stays with extended family, we appreciated having a common living area where everyone could gather without cramming into a single hotel room.

The property has its own strawberry farm where guests can pick their own fruit, which children absolutely love. There is also a playground and indoor games room. The location is slightly outside the main town, which means you will need transportation, but the resort provides shuttle services.

Price Range MYR 200 - 500 per night

Boutique and Character Stays

For travelers seeking accommodations with distinctive personality, these properties offer unique experiences that chain hotels simply cannot match.

The Smokehouse Hotel

Excellent - Unique Experience

The Smokehouse Hotel is a living piece of Cameron Highlands history. Built in 1937 as a country retreat for British colonial officers, the property has been lovingly preserved with original features including fireplaces, four-poster beds, and English country gardens.

Staying here feels like stepping back in time. The rooms have no televisions by design, encouraging guests to read by the fire or explore the gardens. Their English-style cream tea is served in a drawing room that could have been lifted directly from the Cotswolds.

This is not the property for travelers seeking modern amenities or contemporary design. However, for history enthusiasts and those who appreciate heritage accommodation, The Smokehouse offers an experience available nowhere else in Malaysia.

Price Range MYR 350 - 600 per night
Best For History lovers, couples

Practical Booking Tips

Based on my experience, here are some practical recommendations for booking accommodations in Cameron Highlands:

  • Book ahead for weekends: Cameron Highlands is a popular escape for Kuala Lumpur residents. Friday and Saturday nights can sell out weeks in advance, especially during school holidays.
  • Consider weekday stays: Not only are rooms more available, but many properties offer reduced rates for Sunday through Thursday nights.
  • Check direct booking rates: While booking platforms are convenient, I have often found better rates by contacting hotels directly, especially for longer stays.
  • Request upper floors: If your hotel is on a main road, upper floor rooms tend to be quieter and offer better views.
  • Verify heating options: Nights can get surprisingly cold. Confirm your room has adequate heating or extra blankets available.
